Back in June, we threw a party for my parents’ 50th Anniversary. It was really nice to be around family and friends and we all had a great time. After the celebration, my dad said he wanted to hold a family reunion August 2015. So my sister and I said, if Daddy wants a reunion, then let’s organize this reunion.
When I was a child, we’d go to the Hodges Family reunion just about every year it was thrown. Eventually, my children attended the reunions, then something happened. The older generation began making their transitions to live with the ancestors and we stopped having the reunions. I blame my generation for not keeping the family reunion tradition going. We should have stepped up.
Response to the reunion in Aug 2015 has been horrible. My sister and I were just saying why is it we will go through hell and high water to attend funerals, but we can’t celebrate and love each other while we’re alive? We need to stop the insanity and take the time for what’s important—FAMILY!
So I challenge my cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family to stop waiting for the next funeral to gather together as a family. Start putting your pennies away, because come August 2015, we will be having the Hodges Family Reunion in Decatur, IL! If you have a Facebook account, join our group: Decatur or Bust (Aug 2015) I will also be creating a website for our family to stay in touch with each other.
For everyone else, I give you a similar challenge—stop waiting for funerals to gather as a family.
